GENERATIVE AI POLICIES

SERVIRE: Jurnal Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat is committed to ensuring the transparency and integrity of all research published in the journal. As the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools becomes more common in academic writing and research processes, it is essential that authors disclose any use of AI technologies that may have contributed to the creation, editing, or enhancement of their manuscript.

In line with the growing importance of academic integrity and transparency, SERVIRE has implemented a Declaration of Generative AI Use policy. This policy requires authors to clearly indicate if any generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, GPT-4, or other AI-based writing assistants) were used at any stage of the research or manuscript preparation process. The aim of this policy is to ensure that all contributions to the manuscript are fully disclosed and that the role of AI tools is transparent to editors, reviewers, and readers.

Key Aspects of the Declaration of Generative AI Use Policy:

  1. Disclosure Requirement:
Authors are required to include a statement in the manuscript indicating whether or not they have used generative AI tools. If AI tools were used, authors must provide a detailed description of how these tools were employed in the manuscript preparation process. This includes specifying the particular tools used (e.g., ChatGPT, GPT-3, etc.), the purpose of the AI use (e.g., drafting, revising, generating content, conducting literature reviews, etc.), and the extent of the AI's involvement in the process.

  2. Transparency in AI Assistance:
If generative AI tools were used, authors must clarify the following:

    • Stage of Manuscript Development: Indicate at which stage of the manuscript preparation the AI tool was used (e.g., idea generation, drafting, editing, proofreading).

    • Extent of AI Use: Authors should describe the level of involvement of the AI tool, whether it was used to generate full paragraphs, suggest ideas, assist with language refinement, or for any other purposes.

    • Human Oversight: Authors must specify the level of human involvement in the process, ensuring that AI tools were used in conjunction with human critical thinking, review, and decision-making to maintain academic integrity.

  3. Ethical Use of AI:
Authors must ensure that the use of generative AI tools does not compromise the originality, accuracy, or ethical standards of their research. The AI tools must not be used to fabricate data, manipulate research outcomes, or produce false information. Any reliance on AI for generating content must be clearly aligned with ethical standards and academic integrity. Furthermore, AI should not be used to bypass proper citations and references, as all ideas and content generated through AI must be appropriately acknowledged.

  4. Impact on Authors’ Contribution:
It is important to clarify whether the use of generative AI tools significantly impacted the intellectual contribution of the author(s) or was purely technical (e.g., used for language correction or format refinement). The declaration should provide transparency about how AI tools have affected the creative and intellectual input into the manuscript.

  5. Confidentiality and Data Privacy:
Authors should be aware of confidentiality and data privacy concerns when using generative AI tools, especially for research involving sensitive or proprietary data. When submitting the manuscript, authors must ensure that any data entered into AI tools comply with data protection policies and that no confidential or personally identifiable information is exposed or compromised during the AI-assisted process.

  6. Failure to Disclose AI Use:
Failure to properly disclose the use of AI tools can lead to ethical issues regarding academic integrity. If the use of AI tools is not disclosed during the manuscript submission, it may be considered a violation of SERVIRE’s ethical publishing standards. In cases where non-disclosure is discovered, the journal may take corrective actions, including rejecting the manuscript or issuing a retraction after publication.

  7. Impact on Peer Review Process:
SERVIRE recognizes that the use of AI in research writing may introduce challenges in the peer review process, especially when AI-generated content may lack the nuance and critical thinking that human authors contribute. Reviewers should be aware of the possibility of AI involvement and evaluate the content with this in mind, ensuring that AI-generated content does not undermine the quality or authenticity of the research presented.

How to Declare the Use of Generative AI:

Authors submitting manuscripts to SERVIRE: Jurnal Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat must include the following declaration in the manuscript:

  • No Use of Generative AI: "I/We declare that no generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript."

  • Use of Generative AI: "I/We declare that generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript. The following tools were used: [list AI tools]. These tools were used for [specify the purpose: e.g., drafting, editing, language refinement, idea generation]. The manuscript was reviewed and revised by human authors to ensure accuracy and compliance with ethical standards."

Example of AI Declaration:

  • Example 1 (No AI Use):
"I/We declare that no generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript."

  • Example 2 (AI Use):
"I/We declare that generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript. The following tools were used: ChatGPT (OpenAI). The tool was used to assist with language refinement and the generation of ideas in the early stages of the manuscript. The manuscript was reviewed and revised by the authors to ensure the accuracy of the content."

Rationale for the Declaration of Generative AI Use:

The growing use of generative AI in academic writing and research poses significant questions regarding authorship, originality, and ethical standards. By requiring authors to disclose the use of AI tools, SERVIRE: Jurnal Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat aims to maintain the transparency of the research process and preserve the integrity of academic publishing. The declaration allows editors, reviewers, and readers to better understand the contributions made by the authors and the role of AI in shaping the content of the manuscript.

This policy also aligns with broader academic standards that seek to address the evolving role of AI in research and writing, ensuring that the use of AI does not compromise the quality, reliability, or ethical standards of academic work.

By implementing the Declaration of Generative AI Use, SERVIRE continues to uphold its commitment to ethical publishing and academic integrity in an era where technological advancements increasingly influence the research and writing process.
